As the world marks the 2024 International Day of the Girl Child with the theme, "Girls' Vision for the Future", the Mary Slessor-Akan Glo Foundation ( MASLAG), celebrated the importance, power and potential of girl children in the world, while advocating for better opportunities for the girl-child.


Marking the 2024 world Girl Child Day with the students of Methodist Girls Secondary School,Utu/Ikpe, Ikot Ekpene LGA, on Friday, October 11, 2024, the President and Founder of Mary Slessor-Akan Glo Foundation, Dr. Glory Edet gave a brief history about the impacts of Mary Slessor and the foundation.


"We are here today as a Foundation because we care for the girl child and their rights. As a girl child, always strive to be a better person in the society, create positive impacts and be useful to your generation". She said.


The immediate past Dean of Honourable Commissioners and Special Advisers in Akwa Ibom State further encouraged the girls to take their studies seriously, trust in God and be obedient to their parents and teachers, while stressing that education is the corner stone for the empowerment of the Girl child.


"Be courageous as a girl child and be hopeful for the future". She added.


Dr. Edet further made a clarion call to the society to give the girl child a level playing ground and not discriminate, while also lauding the administration of Governor Umo Eno for being gender-sensitive, and for a peaceful and conducice environment.


In her remarks, the Coordinator of MASLAG, Mrs Jane Essien emphasized that the foundation was established out of love and empathy for the society to create an opportunity for lives to be touched through its various programmes which is aimed at promoting the legacies of the iconic mother, Mary Slessor. She charged the girls to uphold dignity and be good ambassadors irrespective of where they find themselves.


In her remarks, the Principal of Methodist Girls Secondary School, Mrs Affiong Inua, expressed joy for the love shown to the girls of Methodist Girls Secondary School and lauded the foundation for the numerous lives they've touched and prayed for God to continue to bless the Founder and the Foundation .


A brief talk on Girls' Vision For The Future was delivered by Mrs Precious Lazarus where she charged the girls to be the needed positive change in their generation.


The event also featured a welcome song, colourful cultural display from the students and the distribution of gifts items to the students by the Founder.


In her usual way of magnanimity, Dr. Glory Edet granted full education scholarship(Secondary School to University) to Ms Abasiofon Essien a student of Methodist Girls Secondary School who recently lost her father and was at the verge of dropping out of school.


The students and Teachers of MGSS were grateful to the Foundation for celebrating the 2024 International Day of the Girl Child with them.
