Dr. Glory Edet condemns sexual harassment, all forms of gender-based violence

...As Mary Slessor-Akan Glo Foundation in partnership with AKS Gender Based Violence Management Committee marks 16 days of activism, 2024

As the world marks the 16 Days of Activism, 2024 against gender-based violence, the former Dean of Honourable Commissioners in the state and Founder of Mary Slessor-Akan Glo foundation (MASLAG), Dr Glory Edet has lent her voice to the growing condemnation of all forms of Gender Based Violence 

The 16-days event which is  from November 25 to December 10 is on the theme: “Unite! To End Violence Against Women and Girls".

Speaking at the opening of the event, Dr Edet acknowledged the important role played by the departed wife of the Governor, HE, Pastor (Mrs) Patience Eno to eliminate gender-based violence in the state and noted that her legacies will remain evergreen. 

"We are using this programme to honour the departed wife of our governor, Pastor (Mrs.) Umo Eno. This is done to show that her legacies lives on", she said. 

While also lauding the administration of the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor (Dr.) Umo Eno for being gender-sensitive and for making the state peaceful and habitable, she added that her Foundation and other NGO’s are in support of good governance.

She also congratulated the GBV Management Committee for a job well done and further charged them not to relent in their fight against gender-based violence. 

The Hon. Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Dr. Ini Adiakpan who represented the Coordinator Office of the First Lady and Chairperson, Akwa Ibom State Gender Based Violence Management Committee, Mrs Helen Obareki in her speech noted that the marking of the 2024 16 Days of Activism is important to the organisation because of the role it plays in addressing sensitive matters in the state and country. 

She further charged all the representatives from the 31 LGAs of the State to be vigilant and report all suspected cases of rape and other gender-based violence to relevant authorities for necessary actions. 

"The war of gender-based violence is a war that must be fought and won". She added. 

Also speaking,  the representative of the Deputy Governor who is the President of Uyo Senatorial District Women’s Forum, Rt. Hon (Dr.) Ekaette Ebong in her admonition charged the participants to take the gospel of gender-based violence  to their villages and be quick to report culprits to relevant authorities. 



The Secretary of the Akwa Ibom State Gender Based Violence Management Committee, Barr. Emem Ette in her tone setting highlighted the achievements of the Committee and encouraged all to work together to achieve more results 

The event also featured March Past by LGAs GBV, Response Units, Schools, Organisations and as well presentation of gifts. 

Goodwill messages were also received from the Representative of GIFA, Mrs Ann Abraham, Mrs. Charlse Charity, Representative of ECEWS, Dr. Edesiri, representative of the NMA AKS Chapter, NAWOJ, Nsikak Okon and a host of others. 

At the end of a successful event, the Mary Slessor-Akan Glo Foundation emerged winners of the third place price in the March Past
