MARY SLESSOR-AKAN GLO FOUNDATION COMMEMORATES THE BIRTH OF MARY SLESSOR

...distributes gifts items and financial support to multiple-birth parents



As part of its commitment to immortalise the legacies of the iconic Scottish Presbyterian missionary to Nigeria, the Mary Slessor-Akan Glo Foundation (MASLAG) on Monday, December 2nd, 2024 gathered multiple-birth parents and children from the 31 LGAs of Akwa Ibom State at Governor's Office Annex, Wellington Bassey way, Uyo to mark the posthumous birth anniversary of Mary Slessor, who was born on December 2, 1848. 

Addressing the cheerful participants, the President and Founder of MASLAG, Dr. Glory Edet appreciated God for the grace and ability given to the foundation to touch lives. While giving a brief history of the life and times of Mary Slessor, she stressed that her foundation was established to promote the legacies of the iconic Mary Mitchel Slessor.  

The former Dean of Commissioners and Special Advisers in Akwa Ibom took time to reel out the achievements of the foundation since it's inception.

"This is about the fifth time this year that we are empowering multiple-birth children and parents. We have also given scholarships to over 100 indigent students in tertiary institutions, over 500 widows have been given financial support to start up or boost their businesses. The less-privileged and all categories of the needy have been touched by our foundation so far". Pastors’ widows from different Churches in the State were also assisted, She stated. “

Dr. Edet encouraged the multiple-birth parents to be grateful to God for the gift of their children, while assuring them that God will never forsake them. 

In her remarks, the Hon Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Offiong Offor celebrated the founder for the impacts she has created through her foundation while also charging the beneficiaries not to abuse opportunities they come accross in life. 

In her welcome remarks, the Coordinator of MASLAG, Mrs. Jane Essien noted that the programme was to commemorate the birth of Mary Slessor who was not only renowned for the stopping of killing of twins and other multiple birth children, but also for her huge impacts on widows, the less-privileged and others in need. She assured participants of the Humaniterian services of the Foundation to different categories of people , as well as readiness to partner with individuals and agencies to touch lives. 

The event also featured song presentation by Twins in Higher Institutions, cultural display from the students of Methodist Girls Secondary School, Utu/Ikpe, and a talk on "Self Care and Mental Health" by Dr. Mary Udoh, the President Elect, Medical Women Association of Nigeria, AKS Chapter. 

Goodwill messages were received from, Rt. Rev. Theophilus Bassey, Moderator, Akwa Synod of the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, Rev. Itohowo Johnson the Clerk of Abasi Ibom Synod of the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria , Bishop Adorable, Representative of the Chairman of CAN, AKS Chapter, Mrs. Ime Udo, Honorary Special Adviser to the Governor on Culture and Tourism , Dr. Glory Bassey, Honourary Consultant, University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Obonganwan Ofonmbuk Inyang, the wife of the Paramount Ruler of Ibiono Ibom, Bishop Enobong Essien, the Founder of Gospeo Foundation Mission Internacional and a host of others who congratulated the foundation for the impacts created thus far and prayed for God to continue to strengthen them. 

Special highlights of the event include, cutting of the posthumous birthday cake, prayer for the foundation by Rev. Enobong Udo, Coordinator, Eyak Ibongakam Outreach and the distribution of gifts items to multiple-birth parents and children.
